This coin should be with someone who appreciates it! I am not a professional coin dealer, but I do love history and this coin is a rich connection to the past. My Grandfather (born in 1900) was an avid collector and he passed this on to me. For Auction: 1900-S Liberty Head $20 Double Eagle Gold Coin ( I tried to include many pictures so you could see the detail enlarged and actual size-such a beautiful coin) Coin Details: Designer: James Barton Longacre Diameter: ±34 millimeters Composition: 90% fine gold, with a net weight of .9675 ounces of pure gold Weight: ±516 grains (±33.4 grams) Edge: Reeded Mintmark: "S" (for San Francisco , CA ) below the eagle's tail on the reverse Details of Coin: · Designed by James Barton Longacre, then Chief Engraver of the US Mint (who also designed the Flying Eagle and Indian Cents) was last struck in 1907 The obverse side of the coin features a lady's head with 13 stars in an oval with rays above -handsome woman's head displayinga meticulous nose and wearing a pearl-bordered diadem inscribed LIBERTY. It was said that the lady was modeled after an ancient Greco-Roman sculpture, the Crouching Venus. The reverse reflected his training as a two-dimensional engraver side and features a spread eagle with a shield on its breast with 13 stars in an oval with rays above. "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA" appears above the eagle History of the Coin: Double eagles were so named because the largest U.S. coin until the time of the California gold rush was a $10 face value (approximately ½ troy ounce) gold Eagle. When Congress in 1849 authorized the large $20 gold piece to efficiently coin the bonanza of gold coming from the California gold fields, it naturally came to be called the ‘double’ eagle. The Double Eagle was specifically created as such by name ("An Act to authorize the Coinage of Gold Dollars and Double Eagles", title and section 1, Marc 3, 1849) I hope this coin brings you as much enjoyment as it did for my Grandfather! Enjoy and if you have any questions please feel free to contact me. -Kenny
