We will be listing them separately so please be sure to check out the others!In this auction we are offering for bid a larger Toby mug, measuring approx. 11 1/2" x 6 1/4" x 8". He's wearing a bronzed tricorn hat and you can see his gray hair flowing down from under it. He's also wearing the usual attire of a squire from the 1700s (Jacket, short trousers, high socks). His right hand grips his beer mug and the right hand is in the position to hold something but it's missing. We believe it used to be a pipe due to those we've matched it to. This is a Staffordshire mug, although unmarked on the bottom. Staffordshire was responsible for making the original Toby mugs. Typically the seated figure is a heavy-set, jovial man holding a mug of beer in one hand and a pipe of tobacco in the other and wearing 18th century attire: a long coat and a tricorn hat. The tricorn hat forms a pouring spout, often with a removable lid, and a handle is attached at the rear. Jugs depicting just the head and shoulders of a figure are also referred to as Toby Jugs, although these should strictly be called "Character Jugs.The original Toby Jug, with a brown salt glaze, was developed and popularized by Staffordshire potters in the 1760s.[2] It is thought to be a development of similar Delft jugs that were produced in the Netherlands.[3] Similar designs were produced by other potteries, first in Staffordshire, then around England, and eventually in other countries.
