1900
The first Morgan dollar of the 20th century from the Philadelphia mint is a common coin. Many experts are beginning to warn collectors and investors that this date is becoming elusive in Mint State. That is not a true statement. At least 50,000 pieces exist in mint condition. It is true, however, that a very large portion of the Mint State 1900-P coins fall into the lower quality MS-60 category. Expert coin dealers have estimated that only 25% of the uncirculated pieces grade MS-65 or better.
The original mintage of almost nine million coins received heavy melting as a result of the Pittman Act of 1918. Probably 85% to 95% of this issue perished. The 50,000 Mint State pieces mentioned above represents about 10% of all of the coins which are still in existence.
The typical 1900-P coin received a strike which was not good enough to be called average, nor was it bad enough to be called weak. The phrase “somewhat softly struck” accurately describes the quality and depth of the strike. Surface brilliance is of much higher quality and can be termed well above average. Bagmarks hover toward the minimal category, but a significant number are marred and scratched. Gems and coins with full breast feathers are scarce. Collectors should be aware that counterfeits of the 1900-P issue have been seen on the market. They were cast.
The typical prooflike coin is of low quality due to the soft strike, irritating scuff marks, and a metallic gray color. The fields are not deeply prooflike, and the coin is generally unattractive. Even in this condition, it will cost the buyer four times the cost of a regular MS-65 piece. Cameos are almost never seen.

Morgan Dollars are a favorite of collectors everyw Authorized by the Bland-Allison Act of 1878, the dollars were designed by George T. Morgan, who had been a pupil of Wyon in the Royal Mint in London. His initial M is found at the base of the neck by the last lock of hair on the obverse, and on the reverse on the left most loop of the ribbon. They were made from 1878 to 1921, when the Peace dollar was adopted.
