Antique SMALL handmade & homemade hardwood wall box match safe with lidded top compartment, bottom open compartment, original striker paper tacked to the right side and pleasing carved button wall mount at the top retaining it's original old natural dry darkened surface . Maine , 1900. Guaranteed old and original; this is not a fake or reproduction Actual weight 1/2 lbs . 3 7/8" wide at the base by 8 1/8" tall by 2 1/4" deep. Antique SMALL handmade & homemade hardwood wall box match safe with top lidded compartment, bottom open compartment, original striker paper tacked to the right side and pleasing carved button wall mount at the top retaining it's original old natural dry darkened surface. Attractive primitive Maine farm match safe wall box. We found this right w it should be, has been and...will be (?)...; hanging just to the left of the old Colonial kitchen fireplace. It was hanging from an old nail. It had some old and mostly used up match books stuffed in it. Day to day, winter after winter, the wall box held the match that lighted the fire. This is not a Colonial era match safe wall box. It is absolutely Maine farm homemade and hand made. It is styled on the traditional 20th Century box match holder but varies by having the two (one lidded) compartments and the button hanger. This last is more of a design accident by the maker for it is a traditional way to resolve the wood-splitting-at-the-hanging-hole problem and not, in this case, an intentional design embellishment. That said we DO commend the good choice and the stylized appearance of the hanging button for it takes a simple 20th century form and makes it very Colonial in appearance. The whole was carefully crafted, fitted, round brad nailed and knife whittle finished. It appears to be made of White Birch hardwood and has a deep rich darkened - from hanging beside the fireplace - dry surface. This surface, the age tone and the form combine to make the whole look much older than it is and it is only the actual box match form that give it's true age away. It is simple and beautiful by itself, would work well holding one's matches and would blend flawlessly into a Colonial interior. All who have seen it must handle it and then murmur their appreciation of it's form and surface. Very good as found condition. Although it saw decades of usage, it did not see prolonged box match strike use for the whole is in fine condition including the old strike paper. That paper is made from sand paper and has been used lightly The box, noting again that it was found by a Colonial Maine farm fireplace that was used daily, is clean and has no odor. It is lightly estate soiled and has a rich mellow darkened surface from it's domestic location. The wood, surface and backboard are all in good original condition, untouched. All and all, truly as found in a Maine farm condition; handmade & untouched with a form and appearance that suggests it is centuries older than it actually is Right off the wall from beside the colonial kitchen fireplace, it has appropriate surface oxidation and soiling for it's age and from it's old farm residence. Please see photographs. As found this past August in an estate in Montville , Maine . Seeking things fresh found in attics? Please see our other listings from this estate. We found this hanging beside the old kitchen fireplace. We have done nothing to it at all; it is just as we found it. It look like good one to us! We offer this pleasing SMALL wall box match safe in it's original old surface for $4.99 NR.
