Rare 1901 William McKinley Second Term US Mint Variety I Bronze Medal

Thismedal was produced by the US Mint in 1902 following the death of President McKinley. It was engraved by Charles Barber and is 77 mm (3 inches) and is made of bronze. The medal is in very good condition for its age and comes in one of two varieties. The original striking used the first term obverse die which has a beaded border as opposed to the second and latest style without the beaded border. The obverse and reverse of this medal have polished surfaces and appears to have been cleaned. It does have some wear on both sides but the wear is not uniform and may have been caused by a poorer strike. There are also a few rim dings but no major damage. The newer McKinley medal strike has a more sand blasted finish which makes this medal a very early variety strike (see photos for comparison).. The reverse of both Second Term medals have the statue of Columbia, standing, morning, her right hand resting on a shield bearing the Presidential eagle; below with palm branch and wreath with crossed ribbons and a ten line inscription giving the dates of inaugurations and assassination.
