2 folio page typed document signed, bound to green heavy stock outer cover, 8-1/2" x 13-1/2" (taller at top and bottom than shown in the scanned image with this listing), dated at Nome, Alaska, July 29, 1902". Signed by James W. Bell, an Attorney practicing in the District of Alaska, at Nome, and by A.S. Blackett, a "Notary Public in and for the District of Alaska". A sworn affidavit by attorney Bell, with fascinating content, in which he charges U.S. Army Captain Howell, commanding at St. Micheal, with persecuting his client, and even himself. Captain Howell had arrested Bell's client, Gust Brown, of St. Michael, for selling liquor without a license and threw him in jail; however, Brown had a license, and his attorney, on appeal to a higher court, gained his release. After Brown was released, Capt. Howell had him arrested again, put him on a steam launch, which took him 10-15 miles from the military reservation at St. Michael, and released him t Capt. Brown then ordered attorney Bell to report to his quarters, and t told him to "transact his...business, and get off the island", or he would put him off "the same as any other tramp".
