Up for bids is a GAR type reunion badge from the 15th annual reunion of the 21st Wisconsin Infantry which was in 1902 in Winneconne, Wisconsin. The 21st Wisconsin Regiment was organized at Oshkosh, and was composed of companies enlisted in Fond du Lac, Winnebago, Outagamie, Waupaca, Calumet, and Manitowoc counties. Its organization was perfected under the supervision of Col Benjamin J. Sweet, and it was mustered into service for the Union Army on Sept. 5, 1862. On June 17, 1865 at Milwaukee the officers and men were honorably discharged. Of 960 men who left the state in the regiment, only 260 returned with it. (This info came from Google and t is alot more including names of the soldiers) The badge has two brass pieces joined together with a red white and blue ribbon. The top piece has Winneconne 1902. The bottom piece has a photo of a soldier(I don't know if this is the individual soldier who wore the pin or the commanding officer) and around the photo it says "15th ANN'L REUNION on the top and 21st WIS. VOL. INF. around the bottom with SEPT on the left side and 5-6 on the right side. T is a red acorn in the center bottom. The photo is on celluloid like a political pin would be. I don't know much about these pins, but I would think this celluloid insert makes this pin pretty rare. The back of the round piece has the makers name which is Schwaab S & S Co. Milwaukee. The badge is 3 7/8" long and 1 1/2" wide. It is in excellent condition with just a little separation to the ribbon at the top and slight wear on the brass. This was in a collection and comes with a typed piece of paper with the number #1266 which is also on a tag on the back of the ribbon. The paper says"REUNION MEDAL FROM WINNECONNE, WIS. 1902." I will be listing more items from this collection so please watch my listings. I will be doing 10 day listings on these things. This badge does not say GAR on it, so I assume this group of soldiers formed their own organization to have reunions and commemorate their service during the Civil War. After the Civil War, State and Federal leaders from President Lincoln on down had promised to care for "those who had borne the burden, his widows and orphans", but they had little knowledge of how to accomplish this task. T was also little political pressure to see that the promises were kept. With this as a background, groups of men began joining together first for comraderie, then for political power. The most powerful among the various organizations would be the Grand Army of the Republic (G A R). Founded in Decatur, Illinois on April 6, 1866 by Benjamin Stephenson, membership was limited to honor discharged veterans of the Union Army, Navy, Marine Corps, and Rvenue Cutter Service who had served between 1861 and 1865. By 1890, t would be 409,489 veterans of the "War of the Rebellion" I will ship First Class for 2.00. I am always happy to combine shipping. Thanks for viewing and please bid!!
