In 1870 Maria Longworth started her company in Cincinnati,Ohio when she perfected her glazes.Rookwood was named after her families estate. The company stayed in business for 70 years and fell in the depression but was taken over by a local businessman. This piece shows the absolutely stunning art that was created. The vase is 8 1/2" tall and the mouth is 31/4" with a bulbous shape. The backstamp is clearly showing the backwards R&P with the 927 shape number and the D which is the size.Sizes range from A-F. A,being the largest and F,being the smallest Because it has the Roman Numeral II,it was made in 1902.This beauty has Nasturtiams with their limp stems that give them the grace and elegance they have in life. The glaze is the standard glaze she perfected and the colors range from browns to oranges...bright to soft.I took several pictures in normal light, with and without the flash to try and give you the pictures I could. The vase is in wonderful condition for 112 years old. There are no chips, cracks or repairs and has very fine overall and uniform crazing. There are 2 or 3 very minute size white spots but where probably in the glaze or firing process but did not show up in the pictures.Hard to notice and would not affect the piece.I took it to a dealer of pottery and they said the art work might have been done by her brother John Zetta. read more
