WWI German Military Regimental Beer Stein, Infantry, Munich Lithophane of King Ludwig II of Bavaria This WWI German crockery stein stands 12 inches tall from the base to top of the infantryman on the ornate pewter lid. The lithophane in the base is a portrait of King Ludwig II of Bavaria (also known as The Mad King, builder of Neuschwanstein Castle ). The roster of officers’ and infantrymen’s names appears on either side of the handle. The pewter lid is 5” tall. The infantryman stands at ease with his rifle at his side. He has the rucksack on and details can be seen in the photos. The lid is heavily embossed and lettering (starting at the top) reads: ES LEBE DER RESERVE MANN. (on the banner) DER TREU GEDIHNT HAT SEINE ZEIT IHM SEI EIN VOLLES GLAS GEWEIHT (inside oval medallion) RESERVE HAT RUH . The motif is oak leaves, laurel and the German Cross (symbol of the German Army until 1915). The thumb lift is an ornate Eagle/Griffin holding a shield with the Iron Cross with sun rays, equally detailed on the front and back. The figural portion of the thumb lift measures 1-1/2” x 2”.
