Up for auction is grouping of items from the estate of Major General William S. McCaskey. They are from the years 1902 to 1904 when Colonel McCaskey was the commanding officer at Fort Sheridan, Illinois. In 1902 William McCaskey and the 20th Infantry returned from the Philippines and were sent to Fort Sheridan.Up for auction are:1. A grouping of two letters and their original mailing envelopes. These letters were written by William McCaskey to his wife. The first letter is dated Jan. 23, 1903. He wrote this letter from Indianapolis, In. to his wife at Fort Sheridan. The mailing envelope he used was a War Department, Recruiting Station, U.S. Army, Indianapolis, Ind. stationery envelope. He wrote a two page letter to his wife. He writes of the people he is meeting in Indianapolis; General Ride, Mr. Torkington(author of "Gentleman from Indiana") and Attorney General Taylor and other news. The letter and envelope are in excellent condition. T is a Fort Sheridan postmark on the back of the envelope. The second letter was written on Good Friday in April of 1903. The mailing envelope was postmarked in Fort Sheridan on April 10, 1903. It is a Fort Sheridan stationery envelope. William wrote a one page letter to his wife.
