1903-O
Many of the newer collectors of Morgan dollars find it hard to believe that this issue was once priced higher than the 1892-S and the 1893-S. As late as 1962, the 1903-O dollar was the key coin in the Morgan series. Then suddenly, in 1962, great quantities of bags of this and other New Orleans silver dollars came pouring out of the U.S. Treasury vaults. (These vaults even contained a few bags of Liberty Seated dollars!) In a very short time, this once-mighty issue was ousted from the top ranks.
So many new coins invaded the market in this period that over 90% of the coins seen today are in Mint State. Investors and collectors should realize, however, that even with the large percentage of uncirculated pieces, this is not a common coin in any grade. With the release of the Treasury hoard, it is still doubtful if as many as 50,000 total pieces exist. Obviously, this date was heavily melted, but not heavily circulated.
The typical coin seen is either fully struck, or weakly struck, or halfway in between. The strike quality runs from A to Z. Almost all pieces, however, have a beautiful brilliance with only a few bagmarks. With strike quality being the largest single variable, over half of the pieces received a weak strike or a below average impression from the dies. The weakness can be seen in the absence of breast feathers on many uncirculated pieces. Many full struck 1903-O dollars inherited the blazing finish and the minimal bagmarks, making 65+ gem pieces relatively plentiful.
Prooflike pieces are scarce, especially those which are fully struck. When available, they are always the brilliant type with a minor amount of contrast. The cost is approximately twice that of the MS-65 coin. Cameos are rare.

Morgan Dollars are a favorite of collectors everyw Authorized by the Bland-Allison Act of 1878, the dollars were designed by George T. Morgan, who had been a pupil of Wyon in the Royal Mint in London. His initial M is found at the base of the neck by the last lock of hair on the obverse, and on the reverse on the left most loop of the ribbon. They were made from 1878 to 1921, when the Peace dollar was adopted.
