Authentic Old 1903 Krewe of Rex Souvenir Cup or Trophy
My internet search for similar items came up with nothing, so I believe this is quite rare. I think it is probably a commemorative cup or vase given to guests at the 1903 Rex ball. The Krewe of Rex was created in 1872 and still is a central part of Mardi Gras in New Orleans. Decoration : The cup says " Rex 1903 "in sort of art-nouveau lettering on the front (molded into the castcup). The handles have molded lettering too -- the left one says " Carnival " and the right says " New Orleans ". On the back, the handles say the same. The handles have crowns at top. Construction : This cup appears to be brass in the main part. The handles are brass-plated metal. Interestingly, the base (bottom 1/2") is plated -- on the outside it's somewhat shinier than the rest, and on the inside it's a silver colored metal. Dimensions : It measures 3" high at highest point and 4-1/2" wide. Condition : Great! No cracks, breaks, or dents. Overall very light scratching/rubbing. The bottom 1/2" has some extremely shallow dings that I felt rather than saw -- this portion is clearly a softer metal than the main brass body. On the left handle, the crown is missing its finial. The brass plating on the handles shows slight wear. T is darkening at the top rim and a bit inside, which I have not attempted to clean.
