Brand Book of the Northwestern Stock Growers' Association. The by-laws indicate that the association represented the interests of South Dakota stock growers and adjacent states. Reviewing the lists of brands, it appears to represent western South Dakota, southwestern North Dakota, southeastern Montana, and northeastern Wyoming. Most of the executive officers were from Belle Fourche, South Dakota and the association seems to have ties to Belle Fourche. As the name implies it is a listing of ranchers or ranches and their respective cattle and horse brands. Interspersed throughout the book are ads for local business, saddle companies, and various regional and national livestock commission companies. The ads range from quarter page to full page and double page. The front of the book has a listing of officers and executive committee and bylaws of the association. It states that the association was incorporated in 1902. Quite a reference book! The page size is approx. 4" x 6.5", and t are 198 pages, & the pages have a narrow alphabetical & numerical brand index tab. T is a fair amount of wear along the tab edges but it not too distracting. A number of pages have pencil writing or doodling on them which could be erased with a gum eraser. I would guess about 5-10% of the pages have some writing or doodling on them. A few pages have minor tears on them but again it is rather minor. The title page has yellowed more than the others and paper is maybe somewhat brittle. It does not appear to have any missing pages. Now for the bad news - the cover is tough condition. It is completely separated from the bound book pages and it is quite tattered along the spline. It looks like someone may have tried re-attaching by stitching back onto the book at one time. The inside lining of the cover is also torn (see the last two scans). I think the book could be professionally rebound. In spite of this flaw, it is still a great item in the present condition and a great piece of history. When was the last time you saw another one?? High bidder pays $4.25 priority shipping. Insurance is optional but the seller will NOT be responsible for lost or damaged merchandise! Thanks for looking. Check out my other auctions!
