1904-O MS 65 NGC Graded Morgan Dollar. Much better visual impact than the typical uncirculated dollar in my opinion. Bright white surfaces and nice luster are highlighted by peripheral edge toning that formed in a crescent in the front of Miss Liberty's portrait. The uploaded photos allow detailed inspection of the relatively mark free surfaces but it is difficult to capture the natural coloration of the toning the blends from an autumn haze through a deeper red and ends with a band of deep steel-blue. The effect is most noticeable on the obverse. The toning is less intense on the reverse but better highlights a semi-prooflike field behind the eagle and raised devices. It is a beautiful coin in my opinion even for the lofty grade. At one point in the early sixties these later date New Orleans mint Morgan dollars were genuinely scarce. The 1962 Seattle World's Fair Exposition changed all that. In addition to the Space Needle, another attraction was a the 'Million Dollar' display; one-thousand bags of Morgans dumped out in a plexiglass box or some such. Imagine the shock to the coin market when previously rare New Orleans date coins were suddenly seen in public view by the thousands. This coin likely was taken from the Treasury vaults in that era.
