With a prize presentation label to the front free endpaper awarded to Edith Bryan, dated 1905. John Bunyan (1628 – 1688) was an English Christian writer and preacher, best remembered for The Pilgrim's Progress, first published in February 1678. It is regarded as one of the most significant works of religious English literature, and has been translated into more than 200 languages, never being out of print. Bunyan began his work while in the Bedfordshire county gaol for violations of the Conventicle Act, which prohibited the holding of religious services outside the auspices of the established Church of England. CONDITION In a decorative cloth binding. Externally, very smart with just some shelfwear only. Front hinge slightly strained. Internally, generally firmly bound although slightly strained in places. Generally clean with just some light scattered background spotting. Several of the tissue-guards are missing or detached but present. Overall: VERY GOOD.
