The Morgan Silver Dollar was first struck in 1878 and was the product of the largest silver strike in the United States, the Comstock Lode, located in Northern Nevada. The strike occurred in the mid-1870s. The Morgan Silver Dollar did not gain much attention during its minting years, 1878-1904 and then again in 1921. However, because of its connection to an important time in America it finds favor among a lot of collectors and is one of the most collected coins in our history. The older Morgan’s are more rare because they were melted down in order to create the 1921 Morgan’s. The Silver Morgan design was created by George Morgan in 1876, the first Morgan struck with his name on it was on March 11, 1878. The coin was named after its designer. The design on the obverse side of the coin is an image of a Liberty Head, which he created from the image of a young schoolteacher from Philadelphia.
