Antique lithograph of a Flemish harbor scene by Henry (Hendrick or Henri) Cassiers (Belgium 1858-1944). Image size is 7 3/4" by 16", marked lower left corner "facsimile d'apres H Cassiers". Print is in the original 11 1/2" by 20" dark oak frame. It has never been removed from the frame which still has the label of the original point-of-purchase glued to the back, "Rudolph Ackermann, Dealer in Works of Art, 203 Regent Street, corner of Conduit Street, London W and 30 New Bond Street.". These street addresses on the business card place the piece around 1904-1910. I don't think that t is much fading to the print- the surprising choice of a yellow sky is still quite bright and the accents of teal and red in the image have held their colors nicely. Overall, a very pleasing composition- the colors glow because of the dramatically dark oak around them. I detect a little toning at the right edge and a faint bit of foxing in the sky to the right of the mast and sails of the ship. Henry Cassiers is best known for his genre watercolors and gouaches- many became postcards at the turn of the century. He is a "maitre de l'affiche" for the Art Nouveau posters he created for the Red Star Line and the Expo Universelles Bruxelles. I think this print would suit an Arts & Crafts interior nicely.
