In this auction we offer AT NO RESERVE this ORIGINAL circa 1905 souvenir napkin ring picturing the four stack ocean liner KAISER WILHELM II of the North German Lloyd Line. KAISER WILHELM II was a historic liner. She was launched in 1903 at Stettin, Germany, weighing in at 19,361 tons and sporting four regal smoke stacks as had become standard on luxury liners. From 1904 to 1907 KAISER WILHELM II held the Blue Riband for the fastest eastbound crossing of the Atlantic. In August 1914 at the outbreak of World War I, KAISER WILHELM II was eastbound running into New York harbor . Evading the British cruisers, KAISER WILHELM II reached New York only to be interned until the United States entered the War in April 1917 at which time she was seized for conversion to a U.S. troop transport. As USS Agamemnon, the former KAISER WILHELM II carried some 38,000 U.S. troops to Europe. After the War ended, Agamemnon returned 42,000 American soldiers, sailors, and airmen from the European War Zone. The ship was turned over to the War Department in August 1919, and was placed in reserve during the 1920's. In 1927 Agamemnon was renamed USS MONTICELLO, but she was never to see active service again. Still in reserve in 1940, the 37 year old ship was deemed too old for World War II service, and was sold for scrap in 1940. Pictures one, two and three show read more
