1906 WINCHESTER CATHEDRAL FOUNDATION WOOD OAK TREEN CARVING This as a very nice carved wood letter opener made in 1906 from the original FOUNDATION OAK wood from WINCHESTER CATHEDRAL in England. It measures approx. 14" long, 1 3/4" at its widest. Very nice patina and lots of fine detail. The darker pictures are the actual color, (the flash pics show more detail). The back is SIGNED in script but is not entirely clear - ????? Givueaux Dean of Winchester. A restoration of the Cathedral's original wooden foundation, which would often become flooded, was neccessary. Because of the low position in relation to the water table, this involved diving below the water, digging out the wooden foundations and inserting cement bags. The work was done by William Walker. He was one of two divers recruited in 1906 to underpin the foundations, but his colleague left after a year, while Walker continued for five and a half years until the work was finished. He became known as "The Winchester Diver". A statue in his memory, though actually modelled on a colleague, appears in the retrochoir........ LOW RESERVE .......
