Very attractive vellum-glazed, arts and crafts period Rookwood vase, dated 1907, signed by Elizabeth Lincoln, in excellent condition. Medium-gauge, cream colored, wheel-thrown, earthenware body, high-shouldered form curving to a short cylindrical neck and plain rim. Decorated with a simple bouquet of lily-of-the-valley flowers and leaves, a thicker pale glaze applied deliberately on the individual flowers to raise them slightly, on a graduated three-color ground, grey at the top, cream at the bottom and a gorgeous rose blush in between. Base and footrim and interior glazed with a semi-matte glaze. New to the market from the estate of a local collector who has owned it for decades. (Full provenence to the winning bidder). A beautiful example of Rookwood from the firm's most vital period early in the 20th century.
Date: 1907 (officially now an antique as of this year!). Marks: Impressed Rookwood Pottery 'RP' monogram and radial flames, date letter VII for 1907, shape number and size letter 932F , hand-inscribed artist's initials LNL for Elizabeth Naeve Lincoln (nee Lingenfelter -she changed her name during the first world war when anti-German sentiment was running high, cf page 140, The Book of Rookwood Pottery, 1968, by Herbert Peck). Also a hand-inscribed V mark by the artist to indicate that a vellum-compatible clay had been used and an impressed V confirming this. Also three stilt marks, two on the rim and the third almost in the foot well. Condition: Excellent. I can find nothing wrong with it. T is unstained crazing throughout and speckling which may be deliberate decoration or may be dust settling into the pores in the glaze. Interior has a small stain mark on the inside wall but is otherwise spotlessly clean. Absolutely no chips, cracks, scratches, silver marks, hairlines or repairs. Size: Vase is 6.25 inches tall and 2.6 inches across the widest diameter (16 x 6.7 cm).
