1907 ST. GAUDENS $20 FIRST YEAR OF ISSUE. CU IS $4500! Despite its renowned beauty and popularity with the contemporary public, the High Relief Saint-Gaudens Double Eagle of 1907 was not practical for long-term production. The fact that five impressions from the dies were required to bring up the high relief detail precluded the timely delivery of coins to meet the needs of everyday commerce. Since Augustus Saint-Gaudens died in August 1907, it fell to Mint Engraver Charles E. Barber to produce a modified version of the artists' Double Eagle. The new design was executed in much lower relief, and another of Barber's major changes was the substitution of ordinary numerals for the Roman numerals in which the date had appeared on the High Relief pieces. Missing still, however, was the motto IN GOD WE TRUST, which Barber omitted on express order from Theodore Roosevelt. The president believed it blasphemy to include a diety's name on coins that might be used for criminal purposes. In the end, however, his success was short lived as Congress retored the motto to the Double Eagle during 1908. The original low relief variant of Saint-Gaudens' Double Eagle, therefore, was employed for less than two years, during which time only three issues were produced: 1907 (often called Arabic Numerals to distinguish it from the High Relief delivery of the same date); 1908 No Motto; and 1908-D No Motto. As the premier issue in the No Motto Saint-Gaudens Double Eagle series, the 1907 Arabic Nuemrals was set aside in fairly significant numbers at the time of delivery. Most survivors, however, possess numerous detracting bagmarks that preclude a grade above MS-64. Indeed, the 1907 Arabic Numerals is conditionally scarce as a Gem and very rare in MS-67.
