William Haskell Coffin (American; 1878 - 1941) The Elegant Gate: An Outdoor Scene Oil on canvas mounted to cardboard Signed and dated at lower right "W. Haskell Coffin 1907" 13.75 x 10.25 inches; housed in a painted wood frame measuring 15 x 12 overall Mild soiling; light wear at edges and corners; small, unobtrusive dent to background at upper right; otherwise fine, with no restorations About the artist: Born in Charleston, South Carolina, Coffin studied at the Corcoran School of Art and in Paris with Jean-Paul Laurens. He was best known as a prolific illustrator for such magazines as Redbook and the American. In addition to his famous “Coffin Girl,” he was also well respected for his portraits, landscapes, seascapes, and street scenes.
