EXTREMELY RARE 1908 ALERT FIRE COMPANY Celebration Pinback
Up for auction is this Vintage 1908 ALERT FIRE COMPANY Celebration Pinback VERY RARE for your collecting pleasure. THis is an unbelievable estate sale find. Marked, dated and protected for many many years...this beautiful pinback button is original and in great shape!!! Printed on the front of the button is: "GRAND TRIPLE CELEBRATION ALERT FIRE COMPANY NO. 1 DOWNINGTON. PA NOV 7TH 1887 1908 (A GORGEOUS pictured of a horse drawn fore engine) TWENTY FIRST ANNIVERSARY DEDICATION OF ANNEX HOUSING OF CHEMICAL." The back is stamped in circular foarmat: " J.H. SHAW CO. 1326 ARCH ST. PHILA PA. and PATD MAY 31 , 98." as pictured. THIS IS THE REAL DEAL!!! We have done a bit of research and the internet reveals: " The Alert Fire Company #1 was formed on 18 August 1887 when twelve men gatd and realized the need for fire protection in the Boro of Downingtown. The men struggled to build the company, but on 19 December 1887 the first Hook and Ladder was delivered to the company. The Alert Fire Co #1 was first built in 1891 on the east side of Downing Ave which enabled the members to house the truck and to have company meetings. By 1918 the company had moved away from horse drawn apparatus and had aquired motorized apparatus, which caused a housing problem for the company. The Downing Ave. station was only built to accomodate horse drawn apparatus. So the membership started a search for new property to build on. . In 1941, 23 years after deciding to build a new station the first meeting was held in the new Alert Fire Co. #1 station located on Pennsylvania Ave. w they are located to this day.. " Several websites currently carry a FEW of these period Fire Fighting pieces such as this. The prices START at about $250 and go up Up UP!!!
