1908-S Indian Head Cent. PCGS graded MS-65 Red. This is a bright beautiful example of this tough and popular date. The strike is full and the fields are prooflike! This is a simply outstanding piece. This is the first year of any minor coins being minted at the San Francisco Mint. The need for small change was necessitated partly because the trolley line wanted to increase its fare from 5¢ to 6¢. Since only silver and gold coins were in circulation, and the lowest denomination was the silver Half-Dime, last minted in 1873, there was beginning to be a real need for small change in that city. Pop 185; 32 finer in 66. (PCGS # 2234).
