1910 Bronze Annual Assay Commission Medal. 1.5 inches by 2 inches . Featuring Treasury Secretary George Cortelyou on the obverse. This medal is a circa 1960's restrike made by the U.S. Mint in error . Apparently someone struck Secretary Cortelyou medals with a vintage die pairing from the actual 1909 Assay Commission medal. An unknown number of these medals escaped detection before the Mint corrected itself and struck the Cortelyou medal with the intended blank reverse. Restrikes are noted for their "softer" appearance. Contact marks on cheek, and to the rear of head. An interesting alternative to purchasing the actual (and rare) 1909 Assay medal . These restrikes don't come upon the market that often.
