An incredibly moving item,an in memoriam/mourning card for three victims of the West Stanley Colliery Disaster of 16th.February 1916.They are named William Charlton (Father aged 53 years),Thomas Nelson Charlton (son aged 21 years),and James Charlton(son aged just 15 years.)They lived at 3 Manx Street,Stanley.William's widow,Elizabeth, lost the three breadwinners of the family, leaving her with five younger infants (four daughters and a son) to bring up alone.William died in the Brockwell Seam, cause of death given as "monoxide/burnt".Thomas Nelson died in the Towneley Seam, cause of death given as "monoxide/head injury".Fifteen year old James died with his father in the Brockwell Seam,"monoxide/burnt."They were interred at West Stanley Cemetery on Sunday 21st February 1909.All these details (and also actual photographs of the poor souls) available via a simple internet search.A tragic piece of British mining history - one hundred and sixty eight men and boys lost their lives in the underground explosion. The official inquiry saw fit to deny or apportion any blame but it is suggested that the lamps supplied to the miners were not fit for purpose. The last two bodies from the disaster were not finally recovered until 1933.Offered at no reserve and 99p opening bid-any proceeds given to miners welfare charity.
