It has a vent, used to regulate the heat, on the rear of the base . This is a must for any dedicated sad iron collector. In the 19th and early 20th century, clothes of linen and, cotton would be creased and needed to be ironed after washing. Various types of irons were in use at this period, all of which had to be heated to a sufficient temperature to do the smoothing, and had to retain that heat long enough to be effective. The heating must not mark the iron and so stain the clothes. This iron is heated by hot charcoal which is put into the hollow steel body of the iron and the lid is screwed down with a bolt. The handle is made of wood. The other photograph shows the system used to secure the lid and handle to the base.
