Rare and important 1910 Major League Baseball History, Hall of Fame Baseball Player Biography and "How to Play Baseball" instructional volume titled "Touching Second, The Science of Baseball. The History of the National Game, Its Development Into an Exact Mathematical Sport, Records of Great Plays and Players, Anecdotes and Incidents of Decisive Struggles on the Diamond, Signs and Systems Used by Championship Teams". By John J. Evers and Hugh S. Fullerton. Chicago, (1910). Published by the Reilly and Britton Company. 1st Edition. This historic Baseball volume measures approx. 5 3/8" x 7 3/4" and contains 308 pages plus 2 pages of publisher's adverts and many full page, photographic plates depicting , Star Players, venues, etc including interior and exterior views of "A. C. Anson's Billiard Room and Bowling Alleys. Illustrated with photos of various baseball greats, including Evers, Frank Chance, Ty Cobb, Honus Wagner, Nap Lajoie, Christy Mathewson, Walter Johnson, "Home Run" Baker, "Chris Speaker, the find of 1909" (actually Tris Speaker) and others, as well as diagrams showing how it's done. Johnny Evers was widely considered the brainiest ballplayer of his day and, along with Ty Cobb, one of the most guileful and cantankerous. He and Joe Tinker, two thirds of the famous double-play combination "Tinker-to-Evers-to-Chance", battled each other nearly as viciously and as often as they did their opponents. He was one of the great practitioners of the "inside game", Evers was quick to pick up on the unwatched-for advantage that might upend his opponent and propel his team to victory. In 1910"s Touching Second, Evers and sports writing great Hugh Fullerton describe the game as it was played during the first decade of the 20th century. With an emphasis on what Evers saw as baseball's development "into an exact mathematical sport," he describes the great plays and players, shares "anecdotes and incidents of decisive struggles on the diamond," and discusses "the signs and systems used by championship teams."
This wonderful volume is bound in its tan cloth covers with illustrated paste down on the front cover showing Johnny Evers in action. The binding is tight, intact and attractive with some edge wear, some scuffing to the paste down (though not as extensive as usually seen on this volume), darkening at the spine and some soiling. The interior pages are generally clean and complete with light wear, and some light age toning to the page edges. All photo plates are present though a single plate is detached. A most fascinating and insightful, early 20th century Baseball History / How-To volume and a "must have" for the serious collector or student of the game!!!
