This historic amphitheater was erected in 1903, and is owned and operated by the University of California, Berkeley. Ernest Clifford Peixotto Ernest Clifford Peixotto (1869-1940) was a native of San Francisco, California, prior to relocating to New York City. He was most recognized for his etchings, illustrations, murals, graphic art design, mosaics, paintings and pen sketches, as well as his realism style. His works primarily centered on architecture, landscapes, portraits, streetscapes, genre, figure, cityscapes, historical events and sites and war and military subjects. Peixotto has had his art exhibited at the 1915 Panama Pacific Exhibition, the Art Institute of Chicago, Paris Salons, the San Francisco Art Association, the Mystic Art Association, the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, the Salmagundi Club, the National Academy of Design and the Society of Illustrators. He was affiliated with the Bohemian Club, the American Federation of Arts, the National Society of Mural Painters, the National Academy of Design, the Mystic Art Association, the Society of Illustrators and the Salmagundi Club. Peixotto received his formal art education at the Academie Julian, the Brandywine School and the San Francisco School of Design. He also studied under Howard Pyle, Emil Carlsen, Jules-Joseph Lefebvre and Benjamin Jean-Joseph Constant. CONDITIONThis 101+ year old Item is rated Near Mint. Light aging throughout. No creases. He is most well known for his travel literature and murals. Peixotto was a frequent contributor to Scribner's Magazine . He studied art at the Mark Hopkins Institute of Art before traveling to France in 1888 where he studied at the Accad�mie Julian under Jean-Joseph Benjamin-Constant and Jules Joseph Lefebvre. Peixotto returned to the United States in 1894, joining the staff of Scribner's Magazine in New York, before returning to France for work relating to the magazine. During this period, Peixotto illustrated Theodore Roosevelt's Life of Oliver Cromwell . During World War I, he became the director of the United States Army's art-training center, which subsequently merged with the �cole des Beaux-Arts in 1923. Following the merger, Pleixotto remained as the chair of the school's American Committee while simultaneously serving as the director of New York's Beaux-Arts Institute of Design's mural department. Peixotto was active in the arts community until the time of his death, serving as president of the National Society of Mural Painters (1929-35), president of the School Art League of New York (1936-40), as a member of the Art Commission of New York City (1935-40), and was the director of murals for the 1939 New York World's Fair.
