1 pg. TLS, April 9, 1910, "The White House, Washington" Lthd., by President William Howard Taft (1872-1933) as President. Comes with original envelope. The letter is a friend in Cincinnati, Judge Howard C. Hollister, turning down an invitation for lunch because a mutual friend has already committed him. He writes, in part: "Dear Hol... the truth is that I shall be so short a time in Cincinnati (only a day, May 3rd) that it will be impossible for me to take lunch with you. Nellie is not going to be with me. I think Charley committed me to a luncheon at Katharine Wulsin's for Tuesday. ... Wm H. Taft." Everyone bidding on this knows that Taft was President from 1909-13 and later became Chief Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court, so no exhaustive bio is necessary. Hollister was a classmate of Taft at Yale and a lifelong friend. Taft appointed him a Federal Judge when he became President. The letter is in fine condition. Soiling on the envelope. Buyer pays $3 shipping.
