Stebbins entitled “The New Navy of the United States . One reviewer writes: Black and white photographic record of U.S. Navy vessels published in 1912 by the noted Boston marine photographer Nathaniel Stebbins. Contains roughly 200 photographs that capture a transitional period in naval architecture and shows how some remnants of sailing ship design lingered well into the era of steam-power. Brief technical descriptions beneath each photo capture key dimesions and armament of each ship. Contains a supplement and photographs on the Revenue Cutter Service by Capt. Preston Uberroth. Three years after the publication of this work the Revenue Cutter Service was merged with the Lifesaving Service to form the new United States Coast Guard. Another reviewer writes: Stebbins, N. Illustrated with over 200 superb printed photographs of Naval and Revenue Cutter Service vessels. All manner of vessels are included from gunboats, protected cruisers, battleships, monitors, unprotected cruisers, armored cruisers, converted yachts and more. Includes a lengthy section on the vessels of the Revenue Cutter Service with a short history. Large full page photos include the Woodbury, Gallatin , Dallas , Thetis, Bear, Fessenden, Gresham , Manning Onandaga, Seminole, Mohawk, Androsscoggin, Acushnet, Seneca, and the Itasca . Among the more noteworthy pioneer American marine and yachting photographers were men like N. L. Stebbins, David Mason Little, Henry G. Peabody. These noted photographers ranged the New England coast from New York to Massachusetts capturing on glass-plate negatives the great yachts and the most animated yachting events of the last quarter of the nineteenth century. During their career they shot thousands of views, a great many of which appeared periodically in numerous yachting publications. Stebbins, himself, during the period 1891 through 1910 published his illustrated coast pilots which still today endure as reference works. This book reproduces in full page format many of his superb views and remains a tribute to early marine photography. . . . extremely scarce. CONDITION: 1912. Hardbound in original light blue boards with darker blue titling to the front board and spine. Oblong: 9 ½” x 7 ½” tall. Unpaginated, approx 188 pages with over 200 full page period photos of U.S. navy transitional ships. Considered very scarce. Boards show fading and some light age embrowning. As noted in accompanying scan there is a pull tear on the upper front crown. The spine is sunned and embrowned and has a small fade area. Boards and all pages are quite secure with no markings or signatures. Glossy quality stock. It appears as though there had been a crack in the center of the book at one time that was reglued and is holding very well, otherwise this scarce old maritime photo collection transitional Navy ships is in good and sturdy condition.
