1913 Handbook for Girl Scouts How Girls Can Help Their Country by W.J. Hoxie ~ 1 of only 500 printed ~ This is one of the rarest scouting handbooks out t It is the 1913, 2nd Edition. It is dated 1914 on the first page, signifying that is the 2nd Edition. This information was verified and confirmed by the Historic Preservation Dept at GSA Headquarters in New York City. For starters, this handbook is in exceptional condition. The book is actually nicer than the photos show! T is VERY minor wear on the cover. No creases on the front cover and only a minor corner bend on the back cover. We tried to show how straight this book is with the different photos. Yes, it stands up on edge by itself! Definitely not a floppy, loose book. The pages are crisp and clean with barely any yellowing to be found. T is only one inside page in the book with anything handwritten that we found. The last paragraph on Page 11 discusses that "we are at peace now", but scouts must still be prepared for nursing skills in the event of war. That paragraph is interestingly crossed out with a penciled "X". Two girls names, Betty Barnes and Bess Lerofoot, along with the troop number ( II ) are hand written on the first two inside pages (as shown in photos). T are no missing or torn pages. T are barely any corner folds! The total of numbered pages is 147, signifying that it is indeed the 1913, 2nd Ed. Only 500 were produced by KnickerBocker Press, NY, NY. ONLY 500!! We won't go into all the history and details of scouting in this description. Those of you who have been looking for this book surely don't need a history lesson. The couple bits of info that we will include are that the National Headquarters is listed in this book as being in the Muncie Building in Washington, DC, not New York. (1915-16 HQ relocation to NY). Also, the list of Honorary GSA committee members is very brief and comprised of women from only 10 states. You won't find a better copy than this one folks. It is in better condition than ALL others that we've found online, including all those that we found in Scouting museum collections! The tissue is still t (and not even wrinkled) for the first illustration! The only issue this book has is that the first 20 +/- pages are "starting" to separate from the binding. None of them are pulled free of the binding and only misalign with the remaining pages by a 1/16" or so. All remaining pages are quite tight. Extremely hard to find Scouting Collectible! We can almost guarantee this one to be a 1913 upgrade in almost every collection out t! We offer items in as-is condition and try to describe them as accurately and as honestly as we possibly can. Please check our feedback comments about other items we've sold. No negatives because we try very hard to be accurate and honest! "We will sell as we would want to be sold to!" Please ask any questions before bidding. Thanks!
