1914 Tom Barker Grover Cleveland. "PETE" ALEXANDER, one of the greatest Pitchers of All-Time. "Ol Pete" was named after one American President, Grover Cleveland and portrayed by another President, Ronald Reagan, in "The Winning Team."
Alexander's 90 career Shutouts is a senior circuit record (Walter Johnson threw 110 in the American League). Although he mostly toiled for inferior ball clubs, the Phillies and Cubs, Alexander won 373 Games, tying him for 3rd all-time with Christy Mathewson (who played with many great New York Giant teams). Alexander won three pitching triple crowns (leading the NL in Wins, ERA and Strikeouts): 1915, 1916 & 1920. His accomplishments in 1920 required him to overcome the shell shock he suffered as an American Officer in France during WWI. This card and the substantially identical "National Game" card are commonly regarded as Alexander's "Rookie Cards."
