This is a super cool item for the New York or baseball collector out there. Here we have a silverplate trophy given in 1914 by the Empire City Athletic Association minor league baseball team to John Schaefer. The Empire City AA team existed in the Ridgewood neighborhood of Queens, straddling the Queens/Brooklyn boundary, from 1911-1921 (except 1918 due to WWI). They played at Arctic Park on the corner of Johnson and Gardner streets in Ridgewood. Five players from the Empire City team made it to the majors...Johnny Enzmann (Brooklyn), Jimmy Ring (Cincinnati Reds), Hugh McQuillan (Boston Braves), Gus Sanberg (Cincinnati) and Jim Eschen (Cleveland). John Schaefer was the team manager, known locally as "Pigsfeet" Schaefer for the pigs' feet he featured on his free lunch counter at his saloon, located across the street from the entrance to Arctic Park on Johnson ave. The Empire City Athletic Association were a well respected team and their games were often closely watched by major league scouts.This is the most info I have been able to dig up about this team and about Mr. Schaefer as there is not much out there on the web. Perhaps you know more or may have better or local resources at your disposal. This trophy measures 9 1/4" from the base to the top of the handles and about 7 1/2" across from the handle edges.
