Up for auction is a a paper mache nativity scene made in Germany and purchased in Austria in 1915. Some of the figures have Allemagne Germany marked in blue ink, some have only Germany in blue ink, and some have nothing at all (please read description). This is an original set not mixed and matched with pieces from different makers or periods. The box the nativity scene was packed in has tape across the top of the lid. On the tape written in pencil it reads "Handle with care, Purchased in 1915 from Austria, Cottage in bottom of box, all figures wrapped carefully in green tissue paper." The tape at the corner reads "Creche purchased Xmas 1915", off to the side of the tape on the box it is written in pencil "From Austria". All the information is correct to the best of my knowledge. T are two small partial bags of Frankincense & Myrrh I am adding to the sale. They are old and were tucked away in the box.
Creche stable-base is 9" w x 7 1/2"d, peak of roof 9 3/4" tall. Great condition with individual shingles. Mary-3" tall and 2" across at base, unmarked, chip of paint missing underneath outstretched arm. everything else with her is o.k. Baby Jesus-slightly over 2" long across the top, marked Allemagne Germany in blue ink, great shape, no problems, numbers on base, may read 958 3, not sure. Joseph-3" tall and 2" across at base, unmarked. Some of the material that makes the fingers that wrap around the metal staff has come off, the remainder holds the staff in place (check picture). Repaired easily if desired. Also, staff of Joseph and shepherd can be taken out of their hands, they are made that way and it makes storage easier. Shepherd-Shepherd carrying a lamb is marked in blue ink Allemagne Germany, it is in great shape, no problems. Shepherd-carrying a staff, is not marked, his arm holding the staff has a small lengthwise split in it. This does not affect the hand or shoulder and should never get any larger, looks like it was t when it was made (visible in picture). Kneeling Wise Man-marked Germany in blue ink, 3 1/4" tall, no problems, in great shape Black Wise Man-not marked, nearly 4" tall, no problems, in great shape Wise Man-marked Germany in blue ink, nearly 4" tall, has a fleck of gold paint missing from crown and a very small fleck of green paint missing from base, easily touched up if desired.
