1916 Liberty Standing Quarter Dollar. NGC graded MS-64. Just about a full head with all the rivits visible. Lightly toned. We note one tiny mark between the wings. The 1916 quarter, struck in the first year of issue, marks a change from the usual aspect of first-year coinage. True, it is famous, enviably so. It is one of the most famous 20th century silver rarities, in fact. The reason for this is the unusual low mintage, with only 52,000 pieces struck. Other denominations that were introduced to the public in the early part of the 20th century had much higher initial mintage: 1909 VDB cent, 1913 Type 1 nickel, 1916 Mercury dime, 1916 walking Liberty half dollar, and the 1921 Peace dollar. Only the 1916 quarter stands out as a stellar rarity. The fact that it is the first year of a two-year type also adds to the demand for this legendary rarity, as we said. This is a well toned, lustrous example that shows matte-like, fine-grain luster on the reverse, with lovely, variegated patina on each side that includes russet and gray among other tints, beautiful coloration in that it is completely original. Much better struck on the highpoints of the obverse than is usual, the reverse elements also are stronger, as typical seen. This outstanding Mint State 64 seems destined for a high-quality set of standing Liberty quarters. Pop 60; 31 finer.
