This is an excellent group of negatives from the 1916 Punitive Campaign on the Mexican-American border. These negatives were taken by a veteran (James Barnett Slimmon) who served with the Connecticut National Guard Cavalry (Troop B). The unit was commanded by J.H. Kelso Davis and numbered 103 men. The man who took these pictures lived in Hartford, Connecticut and served with the Connecticut Guard for 5 months on the border. After the Punitive Campaign he attended "Officer Training Camp" or probably OCS at Plattsburgh Barracks in 1917. He first entered cavalry training but when that was discontinued he entered training for Artillery. He received his commission as a Artillery officer but later transferred to the aviation section of the Signal Corps. He took flight training at Rockwell Field in San Diego, CA. After achieving his wings he became the commanding officer of the 346th Handley Page Squadron. He and his squadron were shipped to Mitchell Field for shipment overseas when the war ended. Later in life James Barnett Slimmon left the Army and became the Vice President for Aetna Life Corporation. At the time of his death in 1992 he was the last survivor of the Punitive Campaign from the Connecticut National Guard.
