Rare Antique 1917 Gorham Sterling 5-piece Tea and Coffee Service in the Plymouth pattern, including an impressive Hot Water Kettle on Stand, each piece with a date-mark of 1917. Since Jabez Gorham, a jeweler started dabbling in coin silver in 1831 Gorham has had continued success and is recognized as one of the foremost American companies producing sterling silver today, having been commissioned to create custom work for past Presidents as well as foreign dignitaries and won many national and international awards. Now known as the Gorham Corp. it was Gorham Mfg. in 1917..This elegant set was retailed by Bigelow Kennard & Co. of Boston, MA, purveyor of high-quality merchandise from 1830 to 1922.A heavy, substantial -- and mighty impressive -- Tea and Coffee Service in excellent condition, this set consists of a Hot Water Kettle on Stand, Tea Pot, Coffee Pot, Cream Pitcher, and Covered Sugar Bowl. Each lidded piece has a sterling tip securing a wooden finial (for safety).Incredible Hot Water Kettle on Stand is a magnificent example of superb craftmanship, from the sleek wooden handle (for safety) with 1 3/4 inch Sterling hinged attachment and beautifully hinged lid (for safety) to the graceful stand with its unique warmer, the meticulous attention to detail makes this an exceptional piece of silver. Interestingly, it is 10 5/8 inches tall (to top of finial) by 10 5/8 inches wide (to tip of spout). All pieces of the Kettle and Stand and warmer are Sterling (except for kettle handle and tip of warmer handle, for safety). 2 3/4 Pint and A2446 are stamped on the bottom.Coffee Pot with hinged lid (for safety) is 9 1/4 inches tall (to top of finial) by 10 3/4 inches wide (from tip of handle to tip of spout). 2 3/8 Pint and 2441 are stamped on the bottom.Tea Pot, with hinged lid (you know why) at 7 inches tall (to top of you know what) by 11 5/8 inches wide (from tip of handle to tip of spout), has that great classic tea pot shape. This piece with Cream Pitcher and Covered Sugar Bowl would be a wonderful tea set, but with the addition of the Coffee Pot and Hot Water Kettle on Stand, we're talking actually magnificent. 2 Pint and A2442 are stamped on the bottom.Cream Pitcher is 6 1/2 inches tall by 5 3/4 inches wide, with 5/8 Pint and 2444 stamped on the bottom. This little creamer is a charmer with its regal shape and gold vermeil interior. We think it is cute enough to ''perk up'' coffee in a tin cup.Covered Sugar at 6 1/4 inches tall by 8 inches wide and is superbly elegant, as is every piece in this magnificent set. A2443 is stamped on the bottom. All pieces are hallmarked Lion, Anchor, letter G and datemark, stamped Sterling, individual capacity, product number, and retailer (Bigelow Kennard & Co.).All pieces are in excellent and exceptional condition except for a tiny scratch on Cream Pitcher (easily buffed out) and inside rim of Sugar Bowl lid is slightly out-of-round (having absolutely no effect on its fit or operation) -- absolutely and totally undetectable on outside of lid and easily corrected if desired. The entire set weighs 7 5/8 pounds (120 avoir. ounces, 109.375 Troy ounces) and, at current silver prices, this exquisite heirloom's silver value is approximately our reserve price. All pieces are monogramed with a splendid letter 'N,' and if it is one of your initials, this is your lucky day. We recommend, as always, BID NOW, BID HIGH , DON'T DAWDLE-- some other initial could outbid you, turn your magnificent antique sterling tea, coffee service to the right instead of left and use it for their High Tea. If you love it, don't miss this truely unique opportunity to own a 100 year old, fabulous heirloom for practically scrap value.
