In this auction we offer AT NO RESERVE these six ORIGINAL September 1918 map overlays dealing with a two battalion attack on the front of the 77th Division, First Corps A.E.F., commencing 28 September 1918 during the MEUSE-ARGONNE OFFENSIVE. The 77th Division was the parent of the famous LOST BATTALION. These overlays show lines of departure, GAS and EXPLOSIVE shelling, and objective lines on a two battalion attack front. Could one of these two battalions assaulting on the front of the 77th Division be the LOST BATTALION? The 77th attack began 28 September 1918 with a 155 barrage, and by October 3rd the famous LOST BATTALION of the 77th Infantry Division became surrounded in the Argonne Forest. Fresh from an attic in New York's Adirondack Mountains comes this lot of thirteen items dating to the last week of September, 1918, and issued by the 77th Infantry Division, A.E.F. T are three partial op orders mostly dealing with communication codes used by aircraft, tanks, radio, and pigeons. T are seven overlays including one dealing with a gas barrage by 75's. Finally, t are three maps one of which shows the 77th Division positions on the eve of the Meuse-Argonne Offensive and the division objectives. You can eventually see all these items by clicking on the "view Sellers Other Items" link. Picture one shows a full view of the first 10" by 5" overlay . At bottom is printed in pencil "NORMAL BARRAGE LINE" and "A,B,C, Sept. 26, 1918." Above this writing is an orange contour line with the legend "Present Infantry Line." Above the orange line is a blue "V." The left end of the "V" is marked "A", the middle point "B", and the right end "C". On the left, the line A-B is marked "2nd Bn," and above 2nd Bn the letters "D, E, F" which I assume are company designators. The line B-C on the right is marked "1st Bn." T are grid lines on the overlay. Across the top are vertical lines marked (from left to right) "97, 98, 99, 00, 01." Horizontal grid lines at left are marked "72,71." The horizontal "99" line divides the attack responsibility between the 1st and 2nd Battalions.Picture two shows a 6" by 4" overlay. This overlay appears to mark an oblique north by west attack by two battalions marked "1ST BN" and "2ND BN" at the center of the overlay. At the lower left corner is written in pencil "Sketch for Operations order # 3 28/9/18."Picture three shows an 8" by 12" overlay. At bottom in pencil "2nd BN" is marked at left, and "1st BN" at right. Just above in faded orange is printed "LINE OF DEPARTURE BARRAGE H + 0 to H + 25." Going up the overlay we next find a pencil line marked " Line of Departure of Protective Barrage of 155." Next going up the page is a "U" shaped pencil line marked "First Objective." Near page top is a final orange line marked "Standing Barrage Line."Picture four shows a close-up of a 4" by 10" overlay. At bottom in tiny hand writing is "Line of Departure for Rolling Barrage." On the bottom right are three figures that resemble boot heels. The bottom one is marked 1B, the middle one is marked "gas," and the top heel mark is marked "D." Approximately halfway up the page is a diagonal line marked "First Obj." Three fourths of the way up the page is a second diagonal marked "Final Rolling Barrage Normal." Picture five shows a close-up of an 8" by 13" overlay. On the left side of the overlay is a table of objectives beginning at "H" hour and continuing up to "H + 2" hours. At bottom right the overlay is marked "LINE OF DEPARTURE." Various geometric figures dot the overlay representing both objectives and obstacles such as mine fields. About 4 1/2" up the overlay at center is a shaded circle marked "gas" and "1000" which I presume means an A.E.F. gas barrage was to take place t at 10 A.M. Running across the overlay more or less horizontally is a blue line marked "1st OBJ 1st DAY." A slanted line from mid-overlay to the top on the right side reads "FINAL OBJ. 1st DAY." At the very top of the overlay is pr...
