St Kilda Postcard with image: Sea Rocks, St. KildaNot postally used, but purchased on St Kilda. A scarce example, with very little wear. This card came as part of a small collection with the following typed note: ST KILDA Lonely group of 4 islands 3 ½ square miles: gaelic name Hirta; Highest cliff 1300 ft. In August 1930 the entire popluation was evacuated, there were 35 in number. In 1918 a Suffolk sailor spent a half an hour on the island and being a collector, bought up the stock of postcards and sent one to England . The Post Office was in one of the primitive crofts. The date stamp was used to 1930 but taken back to the Island in 1959 when a rocket range was set up. The old date-stamp was scrapped at the end of 1958 and a new one was brought into use until 1962 then meal was cancelled North Boisedale (sic). Sellers: Get your own map of past buyers. Fast. Simple.
