Here is a rare find: signed & inscribed by the listed artist : GEORGE ARTHUR COFFIN , signed on bottom left: G A COFFIN and on back 2 x GA COFFIN & GAC. inscription on back reads: "SAT. JULY 19TH 1919 DEAR MR. BONTE, THIS SKETCH SHOWS THE FLEET GOING THROUGH THE PANAMA CANAL ON THE WAY TO THE PACIFIC LED BY ONE OF THE NEW YORK OR TEXAS CLASS OF ? NAUGHTS. HOPE IT MAY BE OF SOME USE. THE NEW MEXICO IS FLAG SHIP SINCERELY, GA COFFIN P.S. PLEASE SEND ME SOME MORE DRAWING PAPER AND A FEW SOFT PENCILS ? GAC" 14 1/2 x 19 1/2, looks like original frame or at least an old oneinfo on the artist: George Arthur Coffin was born in Nantucket Massachusetts in 1839. Coffin's father (George) was the captain of the ship Alhambra which sailed into San Francisco Bay with the Gold Rush in 1849. His ship having been abandoned, by 1860 he was working on the docks there as a stevedore. George A. Coffin was a noted marine illustrator / artist. please email me any questions.
