SHK-9. [Boy Scouts, Girl Guides, Scouting]. OUR SCOUTS At Work and At Play (A Picture Book For Boys and Girls), No author given. Published by Ward, Lock & Co. Limited, London, Melbourne and Toronto: No date listed. (Circa 1920). 7-1/4" x 10" color pictorial paper over boards with a blue cloth binding. The Bugler scene on the front cover is signed, but the artist's name is illegible. (The hard covers are in FAIR condition at best). Unpaginated, but I counted 68 pages. Over 75 green and brown halftone photographs. Blue comic pictorial end papers of Boy Scouts drawn by "Maybank". This Boy Scout comic scene looks like Rudolph Dirk's Katzenjammer Kids meeting R. F. Outcault's The Yellow Kid . The color frontispiece is titled "The Officers Mess" by George L. Studdy, known for his "Bonzo, the Dog" and cat cartoons. "The Officers Mess" illustration also appeared in The Windsor Magazine, Jan 1915. This information was obtained from the "Studdying-With-Bonzo" web site. The site lists a tentative date of 1919 for the Our Scouts book. This book depicts mostly Boy Scouts from the United Kingdom and the Empire; but also mentions or depicts Scouts from France, the Netherlands, USA, Belgium, Spain and Japan, plus Girl Guides. The book's illustrations are superb and they are a fine retrospective of the early years of Scouting. Even though this book has several faults, the pictures make it a worthwhile Scouting item. Some of the chapters or subject titles are: "Scout Stories; The Tenderfoot; Camp; The Rifle and The Telegraph; Girl Guides; Signalling; Fire (Drills); A Belgian Scout; A Trampling Camp; Three Cheers; Games New and Old; Badges; Sea Scouts; Off to Switzerland; Up in Town (1914 when Queen Alexandra inspected 10,000 Scouts at the Horse Guards); The Horse; Building Bridges; When the Doctor's Not T; Flying"; Etc. Some of the 75+ photographs are: "The Camp Fire; Three Cheers for the King (Lord Baden Powell may be shown in the front row of scouts??); An Inspection by the Chief Scout; How to Lay a Fire (Girl Guide building a fire); A Scramble Through the Bracken; Pitching the "Bells"; Learning to Shoot; Camp Telegraphy; Girl Guides on Parade; Fire-Drill on the Roof; Learning How to use a Manual Fire Engine (Merryweather Fire Brigade engine); Fire-Drill: The Sheet; Scouts of Many Nations Color Guard; Dutch Scouts carrying water buckets; Belgian Scouts at Play; French Scouts; Spanish Scouts; a Japanese Scout; The Flags of the Empire; An Obstacle Race through barrels; A Gymnastic Display; Basket-making; Type-setting; A Lesson in Rowing for Sea Scouts; Learning the Ropes aboard a ship; A Muster at Somerset House; At the Lord Mayor's Show; Cavalry, showing a scout riding a horse; Building bridges; The Patrol Leader"; Etc.
