is a brightly colored "strip" card from the 20-card set which was issued in 1920. The set has been designated W519 in the American Card Catalog. Today's card is #9 in the set and shows the Brooklyn Dodgers Manager, Wilbert (the card erroneously calls him Wilbur) Robinson. Robinson was a terrific catcher for the Baltimore Orioles and other teams from 1886 to 1902. He compiled a .273 lifetime batting average in his 17 Major League seasons. But it was as a manager that he achieved his Hall of Fame credentials. He managed the Bums from 1914 through 1931. leading his team to two National League Championships--in 1916 and 1920. "Uncle Robbie" was so beloved that his team was called the "Robins" in his honor throughout his tenure as manager. Despite the disastrous ownership of his team, he led them to a winning record over the length of his career. It wasn't until he departed that the Dodgers really became a joke throughout the 1930's. Robinson was elected to the Hall of Fame in 1945. The card itself has badly banged-up corners and poorly cut edges, but within the border, the card has a brilliant red background and the portrait is crystal clear with perfect register.
