Original 16mm British Black & White Film: 'What the Chefs Saw' This is an opportunity to own a rare original (and possibly the only existing) print of what may be a 'lost' early Gaumont-British or Gainsborough film. Directed by T.E.F. Cadman (Frank Cadman) and starring a young Francis Sullivan, the British Film Institute archive does not have any record of this item. Filmography details of the individuals involved in making this film do not mention it either. Frank Cadman is credited as having made his directorial debut in 1932 with 'The Bailiffs'; prior to this, he worked as an editor on the Sugar and Spice series of short dance films in 1930 before becoming assistant director on the 1931 musical 'Sunshine Susie'. The film offered here looks to very slightly predate 1930 (the typefaces used in the credits, the period London taxi in one scene and the assumed age of the actors are suggestive of this) and may possibly be his first experiment with film direction. In addition, the actor Francis Sullivan is assumed to have started his career in 1932 with a role in 'When London Sleeps'. However, he looks to be in his mid-twenties in this film which would date it to around 1928 -30 and therefore could possibly be his 'lost' film debut.
