Jimmy's KITCHEN S hanghai circa 1920s VINTAGE FOLD-OUT MENU and POSTCARD On sale is this 'Jimmy's Kitchen - Shanghai' package deal: a rare pocket-size fold-out menu plus a colour postcard featuring a scene on Nanking Road looking east towards the Bund and the harbour, with the Cathay Hotel / Sassoon House on the left corner and the Jimmy's sign on a wall facing the road on the right. Jimmy's 'Look-See Menu' comes from the 1920s when the famous restaurant was in Szechuen Road . It consists of three panels each 85mm (3⅜") x 140mm (5½") folding out to a width of 250mm ( 10" ). The menu features Jimmy's 'Broadway Lunch' (which started in 1926) and a photo, presumably of Jimmy himself. Its condition is a little browned, creased across the top corners, with the residue of something once pasted to the top of the centre panel on one side. The postcard is unused, of Japanese manufacture, measures 140mm (5½") x 90mm (3½") and is in very good condition. EDITED FROM THE HISTORY OF Jimmy's Kitchen Hong Kong : 'Jimmy's Kitchen' opened in Hong Kong in 1928 as an 'exported and unofficial partner' of the original Jimmy's in old Shanghai w Aaron Landau first met Jimmy James, the retired U.S. Navy officer who put the Shanghai restaurant on the map as a home-cooking rendezvous for American sailors. The two struck up a friendship, and when Aaron moved south to Hong Kong he set up his first restaurant in Wanchai to cater in similar 'Jimmy's' fashion to British matelots. The Wanchai restaurant was basic: bare walls and wooden tables minus tablecloths, but soon the eatery's popularity had its menu extending beyond a naval-diet. In 1938 Leo Landau joined his father in the restaurant, which by then had moved to Pottinger Street in Central. Post-war the restaurant re-opened in Theatre Lane and stayed t until the late 1970s when it moved to the present location in Wyndham Street . The original Shanghai restaurant is no more but Hong Kong still has two 'Jimmy's', the second being in Ashley Road, Tsimshatsui - present-day home of the Kowloon restaurant opened post-war by Leo's mother and previously located in J.
