RARE AND ORIGINAL 1920's LARGE 12" SIGNED HUBLEY "MAMMY with HANDS on HIP" FULL FIGURE CAST IRON DOOR STOP DOORSTOP IN GOOD CONDITION WITH ORIGINAL PAINT! Hubley Manufacturing Company of Lancaster, PA produced these doorstops in the early twentieth century in two sizes, both quite large. (See last photo from John and Nancy Smith's " The Doorstop Book ") This one is the largest measuring 12" tall and 7 1/4" wide. It weighs close to 8 pounds. They came in black, blue, red, yellow and green dresses, with white aprons and white spotted, red bandanas. This black dressed one is pictured in " The Doorstop Book " shown, and also in Jeanne Bertoia's popular book, " Doorstops ". It has most of its original paint with some chipping, light crazing and age discoloration which gives her great character, as you can see from the photos. It is a two piece casting, and the screws have never been removed and still have paint in the slots. The " HUBLEY " foundry mark is clearly stamped on the inside. These larger "Mammy" Doorstops are much harder to find than their smaller counterparts. Sometimes called "Aunt Jemima" Doorstops, these figures are highly sought after Black Americana objects and the collector has to be careful, because they are often reproduced, though not with the skill and craftsmanship of Hubley.
