Up for your consideration is this RARE 1920's MEISSELBACH-CATUCCI "SYMPLOREEL" No 257 LEVEL-WINDER ANTI-BACK-LASH CASTING REEL. This reel WORKS and is mechanically sound having all parts inspected and tested! This auction includes the RARE "SYMPLOREEL" No. 257 ABL Reel carefully packaged for the winner. The reel comes from our good friend WC and his lifelong collection of 65+ years. WC has been collecting Antique Hunting & Fishing gear since he was a kid. Our good friend has been a member of his local 'Fur, Fin, & Feather' Hunting Club for over 60 years. "SYMPLOREEL" No. 257 REEL MARKINGS: The head plate reads: No. 257 "Symploreel" Level Winder Anti Back Lash. The tail plate reads: STANTON ST. NEWARK N.J. PAT. PENDING. This is believed to be the 1st version of the 257 due to the Stanton St. markings. The bottom of the frame is stamped: 100 yards. The exact age is unknown but believed to be from the mid 1920's to early 1930's. Make sure to read the historical info included. "SYMPLOREEL No. 257 LEVEL-WINDER" REEL CONDITION: Photos used in the auction are pictures we took and edited from the book, "MEISSELBACH and Meisselbach-Catucci Fishing Reels A Collectors Guide" by Phil White. We highly recommend Phil's book as it's the best out there when it comes to Meisselbach and Catucci reels! The plates measure aprox. 1-7/8" in diameter. The pillars are aprox. 1-9/16" wide. The reel is a take-apart and comes apart in an instant by pushing the button on the head plate! The "Symploreel 257" is truly a work of art! This has all the gadgets except free spool. If you've never seen or held one in your hand they are built like no other reel on today's collector's market. This is quality craftsmanship at it's finest! The This one runs as what we refer to as a 'SMOOTH OPERATOR'! With the ! This is the first version with the Anti-Back-Lash wire mounted above the level-wind cover. The level-wind gear works and the loop line-guide travels smoothly back and forth. The loop line guide stands free and does not track inside a pillar hence it moves a little differently. Note how this Level-Wind is made, very very unique and heavy construction! Both plates are showing general wear and aging including light hairline scratching, small nicks, and scattered light age old soiling. Most of any nicks are small and microscopic or hard to see. No serious nicks or scratches were found. The tail plate looks very good with deep readable markings and a fairly clean finish. No serious damage on the tail plate either just light general use. The brass line-spool and the spool flanges look nice with light soiling. The classic handle looks good with minimal scratching or marring. Both Cream color handle knobs are in classic condition with just light aging and no other damage found. This is another 1st for us as we have never listed the 257 it's so rare. These Symploreel's should be considered rare and when in this kind of condition they should be considered very rare! For the serious Meisselbach-Catucci Collector that doesn't have this particular reel, this is a beauty!
