1922 $500 GOLD CERTIFICATES COMMEMORATIVE COIN

A BEAUTIFUL COIN IN PROOF-LIKE CONDITION.

THIS COIN COMMEMORATES THE PRINTING OF THE $500 GOLD CERTIFICATES ISSUED FROM 1865 TO 1934.

GOLD CERTIFICATES WERE AUTHORIZED BY THE CURRENCY ACT OF MARCH 3, 1863 AND WERE ISSUED IN SERIES FROM 1865 TO 1934.

THERE WERE A TOTAL OF NINE ISSUES OF THE CERTIFICATES, BUT ONLY FOUR CIRCULATED AMONG THE PUBLIC. THIS WAS BECAUSE GOLD CERTIFICATES GENERALLY SERVED THE NEEDS OF BANKS IN SETTLING THEIR GOLD.

IN 1933, THE PRIVATE OWNERSHIP OF GOLD WAS BANNED AND MOST $500 CERTIFICATES WERE CONFISCATED. TODAY LESS THAN FIFTY ARE KNOWN TO EXIST.
