is a fine card from the set issued by the American Caramel Company in 1922. This 1922 set is quite identical to the 1921 set except that this set states that it "consists of pictures of 120 of the leading Base Ball Stars"--rather than only "80 pictures" incorrectly stated on the 1921 set. Both of the sets are designated E121 in the American Card Catalog. One of the cards from the 1922 set which does not appear in the 1921 set is offered for auction today. It shows Wilbert Robinson, the Manager for the Brooklyn Dodgers from 1914 through 1931. He was so beloved that the Dodgers were known as the "Robins" during his reign. Robinson had been a great catcher, mostly for the Baltimore Orioles (then a National League team), from 1886 to 1902. He compiled a lifetime .273 batting average. But it was as the Bums' manager and winner of 2 NL championships that he earned his Hall of Fame niche. Despite ownership that was infamous for its disarray, Robinson managed to achieve a .506 won-lost record in his 18 seasons at the helm. He was elected to the Hall of Fame in 1945. The card itself has numerous creases, especially a vertical one the length of the card. Paper loss occurs in several places, especially the bottom left corner. The good news is that the photo of Robinson (carrying his manager's bag in his left hand) is dark and distinct and so is the print. In my opinion, this card will grade POOR-FAIR. Please see the scans. $2.00 s/h. No PayPal. Personal check OK. Robinson was tough. He once caught a triple-header. Robinson was a great teacher--not only of pitchers like Grimes and Vance, but also of catchers like Al Lopez. And Robinson was gullible--he was once tricked by Casey Stengel to catch a baseball dropped from a plane, but the pilot switched the projectile to a grapefruit which, when it splattered on impact, convinced Robinson that he was bleeding and dying. And baseball will be fun again!
