1922 LOS ANGELES Issued, CHAUFFEUR, Taxi, BUS or Limo Driver's "CHAUFFEUR BADGE"This is an original "Chauffer's Badge" from "Los Angeles, California" . Made by "STP. CO." it was issued in 1922, during the Presidency of Warren G. Harding. From the early to middle part of the 20th Century, motor vehicle operation was still relatively new and working as a taxi or limo driver, chauffeur, or other vehicle operator for profit usually required a license. Many times these licenses took the form of metal badges with a number, and the location where the license was granted. Chauffeur's badges were simply a way for a driver to assure his passengers or employer that he was in compliance and could safely operate a vehicle. The word "Chauffeur" comes from the French word for "Stoker" . The earliest automobiles utilized steam-powered engines, requiring the driver to "Stoke" the coal fire during operation. Though associated with luxury vehicles today, chauffeur licenses were required for all paid passenger vehicle drivers, whether they were behind the wheel of a sleek limousine or a bulky city bus.Weight: 6.79 Gram, 29 x 32 Millimeters, White Metal.Obverse: LICENSED • 62 • CHAUFFEUR • LOS ANGELES, • CAL. • 1922Reverse: STP.
